Netflix’ ”The Lovebirds” Movie Review
Hollywood darlings Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani teams up in this action rom-com, The Lovebirds. The film, which was originally intended for theater release in Apr 2020, finally gets released albeit on streaming platform Netflix this May 22, 2020.
Should you skip it or watch it? Read on this review to find out.
Netflix Saves “The Lovebirds”
Paramount Pictures originally scheduled The Lovebirds for a theatrical release on April 2020. But with the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down all the theaters, the studio sold the rights to the film to Netflix which subsequently released the film digitally in its streaming platform.
I didn’t think there would be new films to be released in a long time with all cinemas being forced to temporarily shut down. But thank God for Netflix at least we still get to see some completely new movies such as this even if it’s only in much smaller screens but hey, who’s complaining.
Chemistry is Crucial
Actors Issa Rae (Little) and Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) stars in the film and wow, they gave their absolute best in here. I particularly loved their chemistry. Rae’s Leilani and Nanjiani’s Jibran looked incredibly perfect together both as on-screen couple and comedians. Nanjiani’s humor is equally complimented with Rae’s wit and lovely personality.
Both actors appear to be comfortable with each other and it clearly shows in their performance. They just seem like they have been doing this stuff for a long time.
This just goes to show how great chemistry can be crucial to a film. The Lovebirds could have been way worse if not for Rae and Nanjiani. They basically carried this movie from bad to decent territory. That’s just how good they were on the film.
A Much-Needed Comic Relief?
The Lovebirds sure has its moments but I’ll be honest, some parts were not that funny. I even find it boring at times. But, when its punch lines hit the mark, it becomes an enjoyable movie that would make you laugh out loud – something that most if not all of us need right now.
There are better comedies out there especially in Netflix’ huge arsenal but not a lot of new ones which is why The Lovebirds may just be the comic relief that some of us have longed for. You’ll get some laughs here and there although I could not say I laughed hard enough as I wanted or expected to. But hey, what’s important here is I was entertained and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.
Skip or Watch?
The performances of both leads Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani are beyond reproach and The Lovebirds is entertaining, overall. No, there’s nothing extraordinary about the movie’s plot/themes or anything and the punch lines can be a hit or a miss for some but if you are looking for a decent piece of new comedy then The Lovebirds is a “Watch”.
VERDICT: WATCH!

Terminator: Dark Fate Film Review
The sixth movie in the widely successful sci-fi robot-smashing action Terminator franchise is back with James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar, Terminator 1 and 2) returning as producer and directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool). Here’s our Terminator: Dark Fate Film Review.
The Official Sequel
If you can no longer remember what happened to the three movies immediately preceding Dark Fate, Terminator: Rise of the Machines, Terminator: Salvation, Terminator: Genisys, don’t worry because according to the film’s original creator and director James Cameron, the events that took place in those three films were basically ignored in Dark Fate. Then again, they weren’t as good as the first two so we bet you already forgot about them anyway.
So, let’s be clear. Dark Fate is the official sequel to The Terminator (1984) and Terminator: Judgment Day (1991).
Still confused? The video below will help you understand better. Or continue reading our Terminator: Dark Fate Film Review.
Going back with the R-rating
The last three films came out with a more wholesome theme than the James Cameron’s version, which is probably the reason why, for some fans, those three were a letdown.
This time, James Cameron entrusted the franchise to someone who is no stranger to R-rated movies, Tim Miller, who made his directorial debut in 2016 with Deadpool. “Enough of a resume for you?”
This definitely worked out well as it allowed for the movie to depict as much violence as necessary to give the audience a superior story.
That said, kids below 13 years old, this one’s not for you. Sorry.
Cast and Plot
T1 and T2 are arguably the films that catapulted Arnold Schwarzenegger to super stardom. And obviously, he’s back…one more time. This time, as a much older version of the time-traveling robot assassin.
The real stars of the show, however, were the women. Headed by Linda Hamilton, who returned to her Sarah Connor character with much anticipation from fans, the cast also includes Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049) who plays Grace, a human converted into a cyborg and sent to the past to protect Natalia Reyes (Dani Ramos) from the more advanced and deadlier robot the Rev-9 played by Gabriel Luna (Agents of Shield).
Plot sounds familiar? Well, it should be, because this is basically the premise of the Terminator movies. But no, Dark Fate did more than just recycle its predecessors’ plot. For one, the time travel logic in this film, though not sound, was not as messy as the other films in the franchise. What’s best is that the film provided enough twists and significant departure from the film’s original source material all while maintaining its identity as a Terminator film.
Be sure to check our trailers page for more videos.
Stand Outs
If you are a fan of the franchise, watch out for callbacks from the T1 and T2 films such as the iconic line “I’ll be back”. Only this time, Linda Hamilton gets to say it. Schwarzenegger’s lines as the Terminator provide some comic relief. Meanwhile, Gabriel Luna’s portrayal of the new robot villain proved to be a great casting choice. We also can’t help but appreciate the costume designs, although simple, stayed true to the film’s roots. And finally, the two newer ladies Mackenzie Davis and Natalia Reyes could be on their way to mega stardom with the incredible performance they did in this film, if they aren’t already.
Skip or Watch
Definitely a must-watch! Terminator: Dark Fate has absolutely resurrected the franchise and is the sequel that the fans deserve.

Review: Godzilla vs Kong Is All About The Monsters…And It Works!
Godzilla vs Kong smashed its way into theaters and HBO Max last March 2021 becoming the first blockbuster hit this pandemic season.
Should you skip it or watch it? Read on this review to find out.
King vs King
After defeating Ghidorah and claiming the title as the King of the Monsters in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla defends his crown against another massive enemy in Kong. The giant ape and protector of Skull Island sets out once again to defend his territory against one of the fiercest monsters in the MonsterVerse.
Who wins this battle? Well, that’s for you to find out.
What I can I say is that if you’re looking for a monster against monster film extravaganza, then you will surely be satisfied with this one.
Forget About the Humans
The human element has always been a problem for the Legendary’s MonsterVerse as seen in Godzilla (2014), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and the same with Kong: Skull Island (2015). The same can be said about Godzilla vs Kong. It’s not that the human characters in these films are bad or played badly, they are actually good. Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown reprises her role along with her on-screen father Kyle Chandler as Madison and Dr. Mark Russell. The Legend of Tarzan star Alexander Skarsgård joins the cast along with Vicky Cristina Barcelona actress Rebecca Hall. All pretty interesting characters with Hall’s Dr. Ilene Andrews together with child star Kaylee Hottle having more interactions with Kong himself.
But towards the beginning of the clash of the monsters, the characters seem to drop off the screen and essentially out of the fight. And frankly, I did not miss them. As interesting as the human characters storylines are, they did not feel as important to me as they should be. See, I came here for the monster battles not the human element. Director Adam Wingard seems to understand this and gives us exactly the monster battles we need. Forget about the humans. This film is titled Godzilla vs Kong and it should be all about the monsters. And guess what, it works!
More MonsterVerse Please!
The monster fights in Godzilla vs Kong are an absolute stand-out. The literally larger-than-life battles are as fun as they are devastating to watch. All the previous entries from the MonsterVerse seemed to lack the human elements to succeed but Godzilla vs Kong took things a little further and almost completely forgets about them humans. And against all odds, it worked.
That said, it should be a no-brainer for the studios to greenlight more MonsterVerse movies in the future, if they haven’t already. And maybe, put the monsters in focus again.
Skip or Watch?
Godzilla vs Kong is exactly what it needs to be – a film that gives more importance to the monsters and the monster battles. Forget about the humans and all the science stuff, it’s all just a bunch of mumbo jumbo anyways.
VERDICT: WATCH!

Movie Review: “Project Power” Gets a B
Project Power, Netflix’ latest addition, gives everybody a chance to get superpowers for 5-minutes.
Should you skip it or watch it? Read on this review to find out.
Another Superhero Movie?
Superhero movies are just everywhere nowadays and thanks in part to the success of Marvel Studios the superhero genre is easily one of the most bankable movie genres in today’s film industry. And by the looks of it, we may be seeing more and more superhero films in the years to come.
So, is Project Power another superhero movie? Well, the answer’s complicated.
As can be seen in the trailer, anybody can have superpowers with a just a pop of a pill. Although said power only lasts five minutes and no one exactly knows what kind of power you’re getting or if you’re even getting one.
So, yeah, it’s kind of a superhero movie but it’s not just a superhero movie. There’s a lot more to this movie than what it shows in the trailer.
Curious Premise
“If there was a pill that could give you 5 minutes of pure power, would you take it?”
One line and I’m hooked, and why shouldn’t it? Everyone, at some point in their lives, wanted to have superpowers.
But as you might expect, there’s a catch. There always is. As I said above, this isn’t just a superhero movie. It’s also a drug movie, a revenge movie, a cop-buddy movie. Yeah, Project Power packed everything in hoping to please every moviegoer out there. And to a point, it does.
Somewhat Lacking
Actors Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt team up for the first time in Project Power and both actors were damn fine. Yes, they are. However, it is the young Dominique Fishback, who gets the most attention, with a role so perfectly portrayed the casting directors could not have chosen anyone better.
The duo of Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost who are best known for their underrated 2016 film Nerve captains Project Power. And if you’ve seen that one, you know what these two are capable of.
Interestingly, both Project Power and Nerve had that same level of thought-provoking premise. Both films were good and had strong foundations but as much as I liked Nerve, I felt there was something lacking on Project Power.
It gets you hooked and high on the Power pill but much like in the movie the high does not last long.
Project Power shows you bits and pieces of what more there is to the film and then abandon it for another set of bits and pieces of the film.
The movie kind of makes you go, “Oh, what could have been”. Still, you’ll find it watchable.
Skip or Watch?
Armed with a thought-provoking premise, Netflix’ latest film, Project Power, for the most part, passes. Awesome performances from its main leads and a specially-stellar performance from Dominique Fishback make this movie easily one of the more watchable films of 2020.
I’m still undecided, though, on whether this falls under the superhero genre or not. Regardless, I highly recommend you add this to your watch list.
Enjoy!
VERDICT: WATCH!
Here is salida|etc’s rating for Project Power.

The New Mutants Movie Review: 3-year Delay Did Not End Well
The New Mutants finally got released in this pandemic year after a 3-year long delay in production. We finally get to see the movie after its DVD and digital release this November.
Now, the question is, should you skip it or watch it? Read on this review to find out.
3-year Long Delay
I can still remember back in 2017 when Fox released a trailer for a new movie in the X-Men universe; a different kind of X-Men movie. Posing a darker and much scarier tone, it got a lot of X-Men fans excited. 2017 went by and then 2018, and then 2019 and all fans got was a new trailer every year. It wasn’t until March 2020 when finally The New Mutants got the green light for its theatrical release and then the pandemic came. Ultimately, the film was released in August 2020.
Three long years of production issues and still the movie was not able to reach a lot of audiences upon its release. Don’t worry, though, as you might be better off missing this one.
People always say, patience is a virtue, and that good things come to those who wait. Sadly, this wasn’t the case with The New Mutants.
Disappointing
The New Mutants aimed to be the first film under the superhero horror genre. The result? A little bit of superhero and a little bit of horror. It’s not bad per se but there really isn’t a lot in it. Add to the fact that we waited 3 years only to see so little bit of anything, that’s just disappointing.
The cast which included Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair aka Wolfsbane, Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga (City of God), Blu Hunt (The Originals) and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why). The actors did their jobs but the characters they played are simply just meh.
Not to take anything away from the other actors but it was The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy’s Illyana Rasputin aka Magik who stole the show. She was the little bit of superhero and the little bit of horror in the film and literally the only character I cared about. Too bad, though, the movie’s plot didn’t focus on her because if it did The New Mutants would have been a totally different movie. A better one I reckon.
The Fault in our Stars director Josh Boone helmed this one and I think it’s safe to say, this is not his best work.
Skip or Watch?
One would expect that after 3 years of shooting and reshooting that The New Mutants would be good or at least meet the viewers’ expectations: a superhero movie and a horror movie. Instead, all we got was just a little bit of both. And that’s just not good enough. Honestly, if it wasn’t for Anya Taylor-Joy’s Magik, I wouldn’t have finished watching the movie.
So, if you’re looking to grab a copy of The New Mutants, just don’t.
But if you really want to, get it through the links below.
VERDICT: SKIP!
Here is salida|etc’s rating for The New Mutants.

How I Came to Love Watching Movies: “The Betahan”
The Betahan | Every good superhero movie started with an origin story. Obviously, I am no superhero, but this is my origin story.
I was born in the island of Negros in the Visayas to parents who are both teachers at the time. Home to this island is a city, and in the outskirts of the city, is a huge hacienda called Faraon. The best memories of my childhood literally happened here but that’s an entirely different and a way longer story.
So, there I was, in the 90s, during my early childhood, not a care in the world.
There Was an Idea…
Our family was one of the few ones in the area who could afford a TV set at the time. I don’t know where they got the idea, but one of my uncles turned a good portion of the family property into a make-shift theater, a cinema of some sorts. Airing movies on almost a daily basis.
The “Betahan”
The movie house was equipped with one of Sony’s 21” color TV models, a not-so-bad sound system, and the pioneering “Betamax” player. The seats were made of slabs cut from a variety of local trees like santol, langka, among many others. The farther the row of seats are from the TV, the higher they are raised.
Just like a typical movie theater!
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the “Betahan”, the 21-inch localized version of a “sinehan” (cinema).
Every day, either my uncle or my late grandfather would go to this local Betamax tape rental store to check out the latest films available. They have also sorted out the tapes by genre. Pretty much like how you can sort the library of films and TV series on Netflix and most streaming sites.
The Movie Experience
There are two screening schedules daily. The first movie is shown at 1PM and another one at 7PM but the betahan is open as early as 30 minutes before the screening time for the previews. The previews are mostly Michael Jordan highlights, Bon Jovi concerts, and a short preview of the other films in the queue. This is the betahan equivalent of a trailer.
By 1PM or 7PM, the movie starts with around 30 or so people inside. There is no AC, as you would expect, but a big santol tree is more than enough to extinguish the heat. And oh, my late grandmother also used to run a small tindahan. Refreshments are available in the tindahan for those who love snacking while watching. Popcorn was not available, though.
This is where I first experienced watching a full-length movie.
For years, the betahan became the center of leisure and entertainment for the people in the hacienda. A few years later, VHS took over Betamax. The betahan followed the switch to VHS but the name stuck even when the betahan was already showing movies in VCD and later DVD formats. Then again, VHS-an, VCD-han or DVD-han, wouldn’t sound as catchy as the immortal “betahan”.
Nothing Lasts Forever
VCD and DVD players became a huge hit in the early 2000s. Other brands moved with the trend and fierce competition gave way to steep price drops for VCD and DVD players. The same downtrend happened with TV sets.
Consequently, most of the people in the hacienda can now afford to own a TV + VCD/DVD set. There is not much of a need for the betahan anymore. Inevitably, the betahan closed.
The betahan introduced me to several beloved movie characters in every genre. FPJ against Max Alvarado and his goons action scenes were iconic. Stallone’s Rambo and Arnold’s terminator were bad-ass. Luke, Han, and Leia’s intergalactic three-part saga were out of this world. And countless many other characters. All of which I met in the betahan.
Onwards
Fast forward many years later, and my love for watching movies only grew ever stronger. Yes, I can now afford to watch a movie in a real theater every so often. But it all started with the betahan for me.
How about you? What’s your origin story? Send us an email or post it below in the comments

Godzilla: King of the Monsters Film Review
Here’s our take on Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the third instalment in Warner Bros.’ monster universe or simply “MonsterVerse”.
Long Live the King
Godzilla, the King of the Monsters, or so the 2014 movie says. In the sequel, directed and co-written by Michael Dougherty, we see Godzilla challenged with a three-headed titan that’s almost as big and powerful as the king of the monsters is.
Behold, King Ghidorah!
Expect massive battles between King Ghidorah and Godzilla as both fight for the title of “King of the Monsters”. Step aside, humans!
At the end of Godzilla (2014), humans hailed Godzilla as humanity’s savior after killing the two MUTOs who laid waste on Las Vegas and San Francisco. But how does Godzilla fair against King Ghidorah?
An all-out battle between the two kings is a sight to behold. Thanks to Dougherty’s creative repertoire, the monster battles made for great highlights and are, without a doubt, the best points of the film.
Some Things Missing
Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown stars as Madison Russell, a teenager who lost his brother during the final battle in Godzilla (2014) five years prior, and daughter of exes Dr. Emma (Vera Farmiga) and Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler), both Monarch scientists.
As great as the cast, however, which included returning characters Dr. Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) and Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins as Dr. Vivienne Graham, it lacked the subtlety and finesse that made the 2014 movie more than just a slam-jam monster show. Getting through some scenes get confusing at times simply because there wasn’t enough of an effort put in to the story line.
Skip or Watch?
Godzilla: King of the Monsters may not be as good as the 2014 version but it’s still a decent 2+ hour of monster bang. Verdict: Watch!
Bonus: The MonsterVerse
The multiverse is real, folks! At least in movies, that is. We have the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with Spider-Man: Far From Home as their latest film, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) with Aquaman, Wonder Woman and its sub-universe DC Black with the Joker movie, Universal Pictures’ Dark Universe which started with 2017’s The Mummy.
Introducing the MonsterVerse, a shared fictional universe that features monster films including Godzilla and King Kong. Yes, we are talking about the enormous gorilla-like creature from the 2017 film Kong: Skull Island. Yes, Kong and Godzilla exist in the same universe. And guess what, the next film slated for release under the MonsterVerse is Godzilla vs Kong which is scheduled to be released on 2020. Though, as of now, we still have not seen any promotional materials for the movie.
Here’s our rating for the movie.

Netflix' Dracula Series Review
“Sherlock” creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat reunite to bring us this new take on the notorious blood-sucking creature, Dracula. If you have watched Sherlock which of course stars one of our favorite actors Benedict Cumberbatch, then Dracula should feel familiar to you (more or less). But if you haven’t, then it’s not too late to jump in.
Skip it or Watch it? Read our review to find out.
Superb Acting † Clever Script
This Dracula series has 3 90-minute-long episodes, pretty much like the Sherlock series, giving the viewers a feeling like watching a full-length feature film.
Danish actor Claes Bang delivers an endearing performance as the titular character, charming his way with his victims before going in for the inevitable kill. This performance, however, is equally matched by British actress Dolly Wells as she portrays Dracula’s arch-nemesis, Agatha Van Helsing. The unconventional nun who makes it her life’s mission to understand the ways of the beast and finding a permanent stop to his menace.
Gatiss and Moffat’s writing abilities are in full display with cleverly written script. That sermon/speech from Mother Superior during a scene in Episode 1 was filled with such intellect and realness. Count Dracula and Sister Agatha’s lines are incredibly witty and often alludes to modern-day human’s habits.
Horror † Humor
Much like its novel origins, Gatiss and Moffat’s Dracula carries about a lot of darkness and violence. There’s no shortage of that here. Episode 1 alone will prove how much of a menace the Count can unleash (so long as you invite him in) even on sacred soil.
The Dracula series is essentially a 3-part horror flick released in one outing. Fans of the horror/vampire genre are sure to appreciate this series.
But audiences will be glad to hear that the simplicity of the humor in the series will help cope with the tragedies that befell for some of the blood-sucking Count’s (mostly) innocent victims. I would say that Dracula (and of course, Claes Bang) is having the best time of his centuries-old life in this series.
That Episode 3
But no matter how clever the first two episodes of the series turned out, Episode 3, for me, seemed to be an outlier. That Episode 3 almost killed the series. Not because it’s bad, but mostly because the decisions the writers made appears to be unnecessary. The way I see it, is that the writers made the story too close to what they did with the Sherlock series. From there, lots of things didn’t quite sit well with me.
Still, there is always hope for redemption. Unless, the show does not return for a second season, then I guess we’ll have to settle for That Episode 3.
Skip or Watch?
BBC One and Netflix’ collaborate to give us this new take on Bram Stoker’s (in)famous vampire, Dracula. Season 1 is streaming on Netflix now.
The Dracula series starts out baring its fangs, but a debatable final episode almost sucks the life out of the show. Nevertheless, lead stars Claes Bang and Dolly Wells’ exceptional portrayal of Dracula and Van Helsing along with a cleverly-written script are more than enough reasons for me to recommend watching this show.
VERDICT: WATCH!
Here is my rating for season 1 of Dracula.

Review: Vincenzo is Gold🥇
Vincenzo, the South Korean dark comedy mafia-themed series has come to a close on the first weekend of May 2021. With all 20 episodes now available on Netflix, the question is: Should you skip it or watch it? Read on this review to find out.
Mafia Style
South Korean superstar Song Joong-Ki portrays the titular character Vincenzo who was raised in Italy and grew up as the consigliere of the Cassano family. Following a fallout with the mafia’s new boss, Vincenzo finds his way back home in Korea in search of hidden gold.
In Korea, however, Vincenzo learns that retrieving the hidden gold will not be that easy. And he must work his way against some of the nation’s most ruthless leaders Mafia Style.
Not Your Usual K-Drama
Vincenzo veers away from the rom-com tropes that has plagued most of the K-Drama over the years. The series instead has its own unique brand of dark comedy. And I mean dark as in violent fist fights and bloody gun fights. And honestly, if not for the comedy, Vincenzo could have gotten way darker.
Initially, I thought Vincenzo would have been fine without the comedy. But as the series went along, I realized that the humor was indeed necessary, or it would have been very difficult to process the violence portrayed in the show for most viewers.
That being said, the series did so well in finding great balance between brutality and satire. Expect no shortage of executions and assassinations a la Godfather but be prepared to laugh out loud of the show’s sheer silliness.
Gold🥇
Vincenzo is propelled by Song Joong-Ki’s captivating portrayal of the titular character coupled with the wits and charms of Jeon Yeo-been’s Hong Cha-young. Yeo-been’s Hong Cha-young may seem a little over-the-top at first but she’s so delightful you’ll love her. Kim Yeo-jin impresses as the cunning Zumba-loving lawyer and so does Kwak Dong-yeon’s portrayal of the extremely dim-witted Jang Han-seo.
It is the masterful performance of Ok Taec-yeon’s psychopathic Jang Han-seok, however, that amazed me so much. Song Joong-ki’s Vincenzo draws you in but Taec-yeon’s Han-seok keeps you there.
Add to that the great gang of characters from Geumga Plaza and we get a K-Drama that is pure GOLD.
The characters are pretty solid. The plot is near perfect (except for that one borderline homophobic episode). The twists and turns in are unpredictable and wildly entertaining. Yeah, Vincenzo is GOLD.
Skip or Watch?
Vincenzo is a rare breed of K-Drama that does not rely heavily in the rom-com trope. Instead, it does not shy away in bringing its own unique brand of comedy blended with the right amount of violence. And all the while keeping that K-Drama charm that we all know and love.
Mad acting and a crazy plot. Sometimes, that’s all you need and Vincenzo proves it.
Yes, this show is a must-watch.
VERDICT: WATCH!
Here is salida|etc’s rating for Vincenzo.
